Choosing Between Taobao, Tmall, 1688 and JD

Each marketplace answers a different question. Knowing which one you are asking makes the sourcing decision easy.

Taobao: breadth

Taobao has the widest range and the widest price spread, which is both its strength and its risk. The same product appears at several price points with genuinely different quality.

It rewards buyers who read specifications. If you compare fabric and measurements rather than photographs, Taobao is usually where the best value sits.

Tmall: brand assurance

Tmall is the brand-facing storefront. Listings are more consistent, return behaviour is more predictable, and prices sit higher for that reason.

Use it when the brand matters, when you are buying something you cannot judge from photographs, or when you want the listing to be the guarantee.

1688: quantity pricing

1688 is wholesale. Prices are often the lowest you will see, but they are frequently quoted per lot rather than per piece, which is where comparisons go wrong.

Check the minimum quantity, then compare per unit. Used properly it is the cheapest route for anything you want several of.

JD: domestic speed

JD's advantage is the first leg: items reach the warehouse quickly in China. That shortens the part of the wait you can influence.

It does not shorten international transit, so treat it as a way to compress the early stage rather than the whole timeline.

Mixing them in one order

You can draw from several marketplaces in a single order. The warehouse receives each parcel and photographs it as it arrives.

The practical consequence is timing: a consolidated parcel waits for its slowest item, so group urgent items separately from casual ones.

FAQ

Is cheaper always 1688?

Often, for multiples. For a single piece the lot minimum can make it more expensive than a Taobao listing.

Does the marketplace affect QC?

No. QC happens at the warehouse for everything, regardless of where the item was bought.

Should a beginner start on Tmall?

It is a reasonable choice for the first order, because listings are more consistent. Move to Taobao once you are comfortable reading specifications.
